Evaluating and treating patients with dementia is complex and requires specialized clinical knowledge. The occurrence rate of dementia in the older adult population is high, especially in residential care settings. Whether or not incidences of dementia continue to increase, the actual prevalence of dementia will continue to rise for some time to come. Cognitive impairments and their associated functional risks are defining features of dementia and should be clinical targets of intervention.
